Iraq Endgame?
Surge, Suffering and the Politics of Denial
Geoff Simons

'Ought to be read by all' Tam Dalyell

The Iraq issue is one of the most important of our time. It impacts on every aspect of world politics, shaping relationships among powerful states and between these states and the rest of the global community. It profoundly affects the perceived role of the United Nations and other international bodies. And it is sure to influence the course of world affairs over the coming decades.

The current stage of the Iraq story is uniquely significant. We are now seeing the futility of the American campaign, a gross failure of policy signalled by the persistent Congressional revolt, an ambiguous military posture and substantial public opposition to the war. This phase of the Iraq war will come to be seen as a determinant element in shaping Iraq, the region and the future of US foreign policy.

Iraq Endgame? is a graphic and detailed account, opening with the US 'troop surge', which began in January 2007, and closing with a look at the two main instigators of the conflict, paying attention to their lies and legacies, and to their impact on the region. While giving an often harrowing monthly chronology of unfolding events, the book also focuses on individual themes within chapters – so providing an informed treatment of American and Iraqi political tensions, military tactics, the predicament of US troops, the suffering of Iraqi civilians and so forth. Substantial evidence is included, drawing on UN documents, NGO reports, mainstream reportage and other sources.
